Aramot Primary School on Siassi Island in Tewai-Siassi district, Morobe, has been shut down due to its rundown facilities.
Parents withdrew their support for the school in protest over alleged mismanagement and maladministration of the running of the school, a school inspector said. Tewai-Siassi Primary School inspector Steven Merpe said the head teacher had been sacked and a new one would be appointed. He said parents were happy with the sacking and were looking forward to working with the new head teacher. The primary school, which had more than 500 students from at least 10 villages, had rundown buildings. According to Merpe, the school had not received any tuition fee free funding since 2011 because the the school’s census form had not been submitted to the funding authorities. The commodity component was also not received and the school had struggled over the past seven years until it closed three weeks ago. Merpe said all 18 primary and 20 elementary schools on the island of Siassi lacked curriculum material, with five students forced to use one resource book. “Despite these facts, schools in Siassi Island came second in the province in 2016 and third last year,” Merpe said. “This is a huge improvement from past years from schools in this remote part of the province.” Merpe said teachers on the island were frequently absent from classes and often returned late on trips to Lae. Teacher absenteeism was blamed on poor transportation and communication.
