IT is important for primary school teachers to know different reading strategies so students will improve on their reading and comprehension skills, a teacher says.
“When teachers are exposed to different reading materials, it helps them to be creative so that students are able to read and understand better,” Grade Seven teacher Ali Soti said. Soti and nine staff last week viewed a 30-minute video documented by the Education Department titled “Read PNG” at Mu Lutheran Primary School in Chimbu. The video demonstrates the three different strategies that teachers can use to teach students about reading skills. The teachers were taught how to arrange and set up their own classroom library, how to manage library books in the classroom and how to monitor books. Scoti said teachers wanted students to build on their reading skills. “We want the students to build on their reading skills, so they can clearly understand what they are reading,” he said.
