QUALITY learning is achieved if there are quality teachers in classrooms, an education official says. Deputy Secretary for Education Godfrey Yerua said this last Friday when addressing students and staff at the Balob Teachers’ College during the launching of a number of European Union-funded infrastructures. Yerua said the important role teachers played in achieving quality education could not be overstated. “Research has indicated that the most important determining factor in student achievement is the teacher,” he said. “Teachers, you have a very important role to play. “Quality teaching and teacher quality are the core of quality learning in all educational institutions. “Competent, good teachers and engaging in good teaching always make the difference even when good resources are lacking. “Teachers you affect students for life. “Quality teacher training is a priority for the department ( education). “This is recognised by the National Education Plan, Universal Education Plan, the Vision 2050, the Education Sector Plan and the Medium Term Development Plan.” He said the Department of Education has programmes and activities that were being implemented to ensure that teachers have access to quality training. “Let me advise you all that deliberate changes are made to improve the quality of teacher training,” he said. Yerua identified the changes as; Two years teachers training has been increased to three years; elementary teachers training have been institutionalised; entry into primary teachers colleges is now at Grade 12 level and no longer Grade 10; and, The streamlining of teachers colleges to only 14 recognised institutions that provide teacher training.
