THERE are certain practical strategies that need to be looked at to boost the morale of teachers to do their jobs well, says Acting Education Secretary Dr Uke Kombra.
During his first meeting with his executive team, Kombra said there were four principles that should help realign the department’s programme. “I put it out very clearly to the members of my executive team that under my leadership there are four principles to guide us in realigning the educations programme,” he said. “First, we have to revisit and make sure the education systems and processes are maintained so that we have good governance stability and accountability at all levels of the system. “Empower and build the capacity of provinces and districts to help build an effective education system and provide for all. “Some systems and processes in the management need to be modernised to save costs and be more efficient in the way we do things.” He said the most important was looking at ways to make teachers and public servants within the department happy. “The bottom line in anything we want to do in any organisation are the people. If our teachers and public servants are not happy, you can talk and write a lot of policies but it will not be implemented,” Kombra said. “Therefore, we are going to look at how we are providing services and taking care of the welfare of teachers, and try to promote other interventions that can make teachers happy. “For example, see that the payroll is effective so that they receive their pay on time, see that all due entitlements are given to all teachers.” He said there were 35 tasks for his executive team to meet within a specific time frame. “I am confident and believe that with the team of my colleagues, we will work to see if there is progress in the implementation of some of the priority government policies,” Kombra said.
