PORT Moresby National High School is on track to becoming a role model and leading tertiary institution in the country.
School principal David Diowai is aiming to transform the school into one that will lead the way for others to follow. “If everybody is stuck doing the same thing, there will be no challenge in education,” Diowai said. The school was established in 1995 and was officially opened in 1996. There were students selected to do Grade 11 in 1995 but were distributed to other schools in the country because some of the facilities were incomplete. Students were recalled to do Grade 12 (at Pomnats) in 1996. There were about 100 Grade 12 students who graduated in 1996. Diowai and the deputy principal academic Geveua Awaibo were the first national teachers among the many expatriate teachers in 1996. These two senior teachers still remain in Pomnats. The first principal of the school was John Colwenn, from Brisbane, in Australia. He was the principal in 1996-1998. The school was designed and fully-funded by Japanese Government and it is owned by the national government. The school had improved on the enrolment of the students each year. This year the school had enrolled 598 students, doing Grade 11 and Grade 12. Similarly, the school had undergone major projects through the leadership of Diowai. “When I became principal in 2007, I embarked on securing the school properties by fencing the school area. “It was the major project that took years. It was challenging but I took on the challenge and successfully completed the project,” Diowai said. Another major project is the newly-built conference centre that cost about K2.2 million. This project is going to be launched in a few weeks time. “This conference centre is going to be used as a facility for teaching and learning and as a source of income for the school,” Diowai said. The money generated from this conference centre will be used to improve the learning standard at the school to an international standard. Pomnats has its reputation build on academic excellence and is known as one of the best schools in the country. Last year, the school graduated 316 students and 224 were selected to tertiary institutions in the country. The largest number (of students) sent to tertiary institutions was 76 students, sent to University of Papua New Guinea. The second largest was 42 students to University of Technology in Morobe. The school is driven by the motto ‘To do Great things with God’s help’. The school discipline is strictly emphasised in the school. The school administration does not tolerate indiscipline for staffs and students. Diowai said his teachers were very supportive and professional in their duty. “We are one of the leading schools in terms of staff discipline and staff professionalism,” Diowai said. There are 29 teachers in the school, of which 19 are women and 10 men. The National
