PORT Moresby Business College has defied a directive from the Department of Higher Education Research Science and Technology (DHERST) to release qualification documents to last year’s graduates.
The institution has done because of delayed payments from the government for 2016 and 2017 amounting to about K1 million. College principal John August told The National this was necessary to ensure the institution continued to operate. He was responding to comments by DHERST secretary Fr Jan aCzuba that it was unfair on students that the college held back qualification documents. “DHERST advised institutions not to disadvantage students,” August said. “The college as a third party also has a right to decide on what is good for itself. “The college needs to survive. “The college has done all it possibly can to protect itself, and allowing it to operate continuously without problem. “It has a huge effect on the college budget, if one looks at the total amount that is outstanding. “This amount does not include those who are sponsored by National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop, Moresby South MP Justin Tkatchenko, and Kiriwina Goodenough MP Douglas Tomuriesa.” August said the break-up for outstanding payments from DHESRT were:
Graduates received transcripts and letters from the college to confirm their qualifications with employers and educational institutions, August said. A parent of a graduating student, Mary Maihua, expressed frustration at the situation faced by her daughter and other students. “As parents, we do our part by paying fees, making sure they have what thaey need to get an education,” she said. “It is not easy but it has to be done. She finally graduates along with other students, and the school tells us to wait with them for the Government. “It is not fair as we have done our part as parent and they have done their part as students.” The National

I am a student at POMBizCol. What the Govt and the Department of education, science and technology do to us is unfair and injustice.
