THE National Government’s free tuition fee policy has encouraged more matured age students in the country and would create more problems for school-aged students in the country, an independent report has indicated.
The Southern Highlands Provincial government commissioned health and education review report launched in Port Moresby recently revealed that more matured age students who missed the opportunity to school many years back are now enrolled in schools creating problem of spacing for school-age children in many primary and high schools throughout the province. Since 2012, the National Government announced the free education policy in which more than K700 million annually was disbursed to schools throughout the country and the problem in southern highlands is a unified problem in the country. The Hillshine Consultancy Limited report revealed many problems would arise as it was common for matured age students to enrolled in schools to make up for the lost education opportunities when they were school-age. The report recommended for the government to find solutions to meet the demand of the adult age students as there would be associated problems like overcrowding, teacher –students ratio problem, insufficient learning materials and more. The report further stated that the Government’s stronger emphasis on the universal compulsory education in the country would create more problems and put a lot of pressure on the existing schools and therefore recommended that the government needs to find solutions to address the demands and the burdens on the existing schools. “Given the stronger emphasis the National government is putting on compulsory education, it is likely that a different solution needs to be found for mature age students as the demand from students that are in grade appropriate age ranges will already put schools at maximum capacity. “In particular, primary schools (82 percent) and high schools and secondary schools (75 percent) show a high occurrence of mature age students attending and there do not seem to be any discernable differences between the districts ,” the report stated. Like in the Southern Highlands, many schools throughout the country were experiencing the same where many adult age students were enrolled in the schools. As reported in the media, many adults including married people were also enrolled in primary schools and high schools throughout the country while their children were also attending classes with them. Meanwhile the report has also found that not enough was done to enable children with disabilities to attend schools and many of the schools does not have the facilities for disabled. Post COurier
