THE annual Papua New Guinea Defence Force skill at arms meet (SAAM) was completed at the Goldie River Training Depot shooting range.
Based on individual performances, a 15-man train on squad was selected at the end of the competition last Thursday and announced by Force Preparation Commander Col Siale Diro at the closing on Friday. The train-on team will then go into a month’s intensive training in preparation for the annual Australian skill at arms meet (ASAAM) in Melbourne in May. Major Velmoore Kagena said this year’s competition attracted only four teams due to commitments within the force. The participating teams were First Royal Pacific Islands Regiment (1RPIR) from Taurama, 2RPIR from Moem, Wewak, the Force Support Battalion (FSB), Murray Barracks, and the Goldie River training depot. Despite only four teams, the competition was challenging because the competitors shoot it out to gain recognition from numerous selected sites and techniques. “Shooting is an individual skill that is developed over time with constant practice and realistic training in order to perfect the art,” Kagena said. “The shooters compete in range practices over the week, firing from different positions using different techniques in deliberate, rapid, snap and moving target practices from ranges of 100m, 200m and 300m.” Kagena said that the PNGDF SAAM was led by Warrior Wing under the leadership of Lt Micah Jeremiah, Warrant Officer Steven Baloiloi and Sgt Joe Malam who were dedicated over the past months to ensure that the competition was conducted according to required standards. The officers were been ably supported by staff from the Goldie River Training Depot and notably by Warrant Officer Gary Aiton from the Australian Defence Force. The National
