The apparent suicide of a student at one of Papua New Guinea's premier universities has its staff, students and the surrounding community shocked. Madang’s Divine Word University awoke to a horrific scene yesterday when early risers on their way to study found a fellow student hanging with threads of rope around the neck from a lecture complex. Although witnessed by hoards of students, the university was a scene of calm as members of the university community cooperated with police to remove the body at daybreak.
The student was confirmed dead on arrival at the Modilon General Hospital and was sent immediately to the pathological wing for a post mortem due to the unusual nature of the death. It remains unconfirmed how he died and the general public has been advised to refrain from drawing conclusions until such a time that the post mortem results are released. Although contacted for comments yesterday, it is understandable that the DWU administration did not comment due to the sensitive nature of the incident. It was gathered yesterday that the Divine Word community showed solidarity throughout the day despite the traumatic events of the morning and that many staff and students made time to visit their late colleague. Madang provincial police commander confirmed that he was aware of the incident but said he would hold his comments until after he was properly briefed on the matter. Post Courier
