PNG Treasury Releases K19.5 Million for Retired Teachers’ Final Entitlements

​The Department of Treasury has released a total of K19.5 million to cover final entitlements and repatriation payments for 570 retired teachers across Papua New Guinea.

The Teaching Service Commission (TSC) confirmed the long-awaited development last Thursday, bringing relief to hundreds of retirees who have been waiting for their dues.

TSC Commissioner for Operations, Maini Mike Ugaia, expressed gratitude to the Department of Treasury for facilitating the payment, noting that this marks the third batch of retiree payments to be processed.

Mr Ugaia said the 570 retirees are expected to receive their payments before the end of the year. He explained that the process had taken time due to the involvement of multiple government agencies and the need for thorough due diligence to ensure accuracy and accountability.

He clarified that the repatriation payments apply only to retired teachers, not those who have resigned.

According to Mr Ugaia, the TSC’s continued involvement since 2024 has been crucial in addressing long-standing issues between teachers, provincial administrations, and the Treasury. He added that the TSC Industrial Team is now preparing the next batch of retiree entitlement files, which will soon be submitted to the Treasury for funding.

The Teaching Service Commission has thanked all retirees for their dedicated years of service to the nation and for their patience throughout the payment process.
