The PNG Government will sponsor 800 students from Solomon Islands to study in various tertiary institutions in Papua New Guinea by year 2022.
This was revealed by Foreign Affairs and Immigrations Minister Rimbink Pato following a two-day visit to Solomon Islands’ capital, Honiara, last week. Minister Pato in a media statement released following his return said the support to our closest Melanesian country will come under the PNG Government Scholarship Grant which commenced in 2014. “… more than 800 scholarships are being offered to Solomon Islands undergraduates to undergo training in PNG institutions and colleges until the completion of programs in 2022.” Solomon Islands Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Milner Tozaka, met with Minister Pato on February 9 and discussed the scholarship, among other bilateral issues. Tozaka acknowledged Pato for the current 200 scholarships for Solomon Islanders stuadying in various institutions in PNG. Tozaka confirmed that the 800 scholarships will be utilised by Solomon Islands from 2014-2018. “Two hundreds scholarships will be provided to under-graduate students on annual basis until it lapses in 2018. Under this arrangement, the grant will cover tuition fees, boarding fees, administration, airfares and allowances,” the former diplomat said. Tozaka said, Ministry of Education and Human Resources is responsible to manage the funds through its education attache in Port Moresby. Meanwhile , Solomon Star newspaper reported that students have been waiting for their visa applications since early this month and missed the start of the academic year at some universities like University of Technology in Lae, Goroka University and Madang Divine Word University. The newspaper reported that the governments of PNG and SI need to find some solution to the visa delay otherwise students will continue to experience this problem every year. The report cited an officer in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Solomon Islands saying both governments are taking the visa issue seriously after PNG Foreign Minister paid a courtesy call to his SI counterpart in Honiara on Monday 9 February. PNG has shifted the visa processing back to Port Moresby February last year after a standoff with Australia. PNGLOOP
