THREE more technical institutions will be built in the country and eventually every province will have technical colleges established by the Government, Education Minister Nick Kuman said.
He made the announcement at the National Polytechnical Institute in Lae, yesterday. Kuman was with Minister for Higher Education, Science and Technology Malakai Tabar to address students and staff of the institute. The two ministers admitted that the Government and relevant stakeholders in the education system had failed to improve facilities and outlined the Government’s decision to improve the facilities over three years. Kuman said 30 per cent of Grade 12 school leavers were accepted in tertiary institutes so the Government prioritised the technical and vocational education training programme to absorb the bulk of them for skills training. “We’ve approved the establishment of three additional polytechnical institutions in the country, we will build a lot more technical colleges in every province, this is part of Vision 2050,” he said. “We want to train, empower and ensure that young Papua New Guineans who do not make it through to universities to at least have sufficient trade skills,” Kuman said.
