PRIME Minister Peter O’Neill says the Education Department, Teaching Services Commission and the chief secretary were given directions to find out why some teachers’ pay had been deducted. The direction was given after some teachers in Morobe raised concern regarding pay deductions starting from pay 19 and 20. Morobe Teachers’ Union president Mark Nanu had confirmed that teachers had their pay deducted for some reason. In a forum held on Wednesday at St Mary’s Primary School hall, teachers from Lae district convened to find answers regarding the K200 to K300 deductions, again, on pay 21 (Oct 10.). Milfordhaven Primary School deputy head teacher Yelo Amu said the teachers want to know why there were anomalies in their salaries.
“We just want to know the real reason why this is happening. Most teachers who have experienced pay cuts did not get any loans,” he said. Senior professional assessor Berei Kalo, addressing the teachers’ queries, said there was a system and process in place and that every procedure would be followed in solving the issue. “I ask that the teachers give time to our officials in Morobe to communicate with officials in Port Moresby regarding that matter,” Kalo said. O’Neill, when asked after the swearing-in of the Lae City Authority board members yesterday, said most teachers were getting their pay, “but there are some individuals who have been experiencing pay cuts.” “We understand what the teachers are going through. Nobody wants to cut anybody’s pay. “Over the last five to six years, even though the economy was struggling, we made sure that the wages were paid for our workers across the country. “We don’t know why this is happening; we are asking the TSC and Education Department to explain, so I will get a full understanding later, by tomorrow. “If there is something that I need to correct, it would be done on Monday.”
