Education Secretary Dr Uke Kombra has called on teachers around the country who have been experiencing pay cuts to bring their reports to the Teaching Services Commission or the secretary’s office. The call came after some teachers in Morobe complained to Morobe Teachers’ Union president Mark Nanu last week regarding mysterious deductions from their pay, with most teachers experiencing cuts of up to K300 in their salaries on pays 18, 19 and 20. “I would like to invite the teachers affected to bring their case directly to the Teaching Services Commission or to my office so that we can look at how the teachers’ pay have been cut,” Kombra told The National.
“As far as the (Alesco) system is concerned, and the way we process the teachers’ pay, there is no specific instruction or direction of teachers’ pay to be cut. “The only change in the normal pay that has taken place is a pay increase the teachers’ received due to a back pay from 2017. “Other than that, we are not aware of any change in a teachers’ pay or any significant change in teachers’ pay. Unless teachers’ have applied for loans or have been absent from the duties and there is a pay cut, some cases like this might happen. “Otherwise, we cannot give a general response to the deduction unless we see the individual case, so we can check the history of the teacher to find out why there is a deduction.” Kombra said the affected teachers must bring their reports to the provincial education office, the chairman of TSC or his office, “so that we will attend to this because it is a priority.” “We will continue to support our teachers, and recognise the efforts they have put into our school system,” he said. When asked about the Alesco system, Kombra said:“It is owned and managed by the Finance Department and there are two major payrolls, the teacher’s payroll and the public service payroll. “We manage the teachers’ payroll under the Education Department. The functions that we have are authorised by the Department of Finance’s technical team. “As far as we know, we do allow teachers to get their pay slips from all (13 provincial) centres, including Morobe. On the pay slip, teachers will be able to see what the deductions are.” Kombra had asked the salaries section last week to do a thorough check to see if they could identify any flaws in the system. “They found out that for most of the 56,000 teachers, there is no general input to deduct the teachers’ pay. “But those deductions could be an isolated case, a technical glitch or it could be because of some technical matters,” the secretary said.
