I WRITE with great concern about the chronic problem of teachers leave entitlement not being paid on time by responsible authorities every end of the year.
I do not see as to why teachers are not being paid their leave entitlement on time because it is budgeted for every year by provincial government. Furthermore, the GoPNG under the leadership of the O’Neill Government is also pumping huge amounts of money in education.
But they forget all about the teachers.
Teachers are the agents of change who will produce quality education in PNG.
It is not the infrastructure or the number of students you have in school.
When you look at other years, teachers are being paid their leave entitlement but not to what they have submitted.
Those people handling teachers leave entitlement in each province remove dependents of teachers without any valid reasons.
This year was one of the worst where most provinces, teachers were not being paid their leave fares and it is now New Year.
When teachers enquire at their respective division of education officer handling their entitlement, they say they have done their part and submitted to the provincial administration for them to release the funds. Furthermore, the provincial administration says no money because the Bank of Papua New Guinea has not released the funds into the provincial account.
Can someone from the Treasury or Finance department, BPNG or the Prime Minister’s Office inform the teachers of this problem and address it.
This clearly shows that teachers are classified as the least priority of the O’Neill Government.
If teachers were the priority this problem should not have happen, they should have received their leave fares in August as stated by Dr Michael Tapo.
Teachers in affected provinces should stand together and speak out before the new school year begins.
