​PNG Police Arrest Teacher for Facilitating Exam Cheating in Eastern Highlands

Police in Papua New Guinea have arrested a teacher from Ivingoi Secondary School in Okapa District in the Eastern Highlands Province after he allegedly organized a break-in and stole Grade 12 national examination papers.

Principal Lamana Aiyu said the incident occurred on Tuesday, October 14, when the teacher, with the help of several young men, broke into his office and took papers for each subject. “It’s regretful. I trusted my securities and my officers,” he said. “One of our teachers from Southern Highlands organized some boys and they broke into my office and removed exam papers.”

The principal said he immediately contacted police, who apprehended the teacher shortly after the break-in. “I’m still working to identify and arrest others involved,” he added. “We had MSD officers, inspectors, and police come to our school. I cried for my school and my reputation.”

Mr. Aiyu said the incident has deeply affected him and the school’s standing. “My reputation has been tarnished,” he said.

Education Secretary Dr. Uke Kombra confirmed the department is investigating the case after receiving reports through social media. “We believe there’s been a leak and we’ve been trying to establish the extent of that leak,” he said.

Dr. Kombra reiterated that cheating will not be tolerated under any circumstances. “Cheating in examinations is no certification — schools could face suspension or deregistration, and teachers may be dismissed,” he emphasized.
