Prime Minister James Marape has commended the University of Goroka (UOG) for achieving a record-breaking graduation turnout, despite the challenges posed by the 2022 earthquake, which caused extensive damage to its infrastructure. Speaking at UOG's 28th Graduation Ceremony on January 14, 2025, Prime Minister Marape praised the university's leadership for their resilience and dedication to expanding educational opportunities. The Prime Minister noted that since his government assumed office in 2019, UOG has significantly increased its student enrolment and graduation numbers. Over 1,009 students graduated this week, setting a new record for the institution. "In 2019, the University of Goroka graduated around 400 students. Today, it is a privilege to witness the largest graduation in the university’s history. This achievement reflects the commitment of the university leadership to government directives and their ability to deliver, even under challenging circumstances," Marape said.
Marape acknowledged the efforts of UOG’s Vice-Chancellor and Chancellor in ensuring that the university continues to grow and deliver results. He highlighted their resilience in maintaining focus on development, even in the aftermath of the earthquake that disrupted key infrastructure projects. The Prime Minister reiterated his government’s commitment to supporting educational institutions across the country. He confirmed that K30 million has been allocated to UOG to complete major infrastructure projects, including a seven-storey building and a modern auditorium, which are essential for meeting the university’s growing needs. “These projects will enhance the university’s ability to accommodate more students and improve the learning environment. I look forward to returning later this year to officially open these facilities as part of our commitment to strengthening education in Papua New Guinea,” he said. Marape concluded by expressing his gratitude to the university leadership for their efforts in overcoming challenges and delivering results. "UOG is playing a critical role in training the country’s future teachers. Their dedication to building a stronger education system is commendable, and the Government will continue to support them in preparing the next generation of educators," he said. With a focus on resilience and growth, the University of Goroka has set an inspiring example of how institutions can thrive in the face of adversity. Also read Comments are closed.
