THE office of Higher Education (OHE) has invited Australian providers of higher education to consider how they could expand their services in Papua New Guinea.
OHE director general, David Kavanamur made that invitation when officiating at the launching of Australian Institute of Business (AIB) programme for the International Training Institute in the National Capital District last week. He said the office was keen to encourage Australian providers of higher education to come in as OHE had become more internationalised and taken it to a new level. “And there are several ways to that like the International Training Institute recognising the advantages of completing their own programmes with those of international providers, PNG universities exploring formal twinning arrangements with Australian universities to augment longstanding academic collaborations and OHE becoming internationalised in its activities which actively engaged with quality assurance agencies in other countries, notably in Australia and New Zealand. “This is particularly a huge challenge because you PNG universities had never gone to a quality assurance test in the past because they were established by acts of parliament and were self accredited. “And for the first time when I took office in 2012, and under the leadership of the Minister of Higher Education, David Arore, we subjected all our state universities to go through international quality assurance,” he said. He said that had allowed them to bring in international experts, vice chancellors, deputy vice chancellors from overseas universities to be part of experts of international panel and assess PNG universities to make sure that all degrees were assured. “For these reasons only good collaborative partnership should be approved such as AIB.” He said AIB and ITI collaboration had several features that gave the office the confidence in quality partnership. He added that the office would monitor the progress of the partnership between the two institutes
