MINISTER for Higher Education, Research and Science, Malakai Tabar has called on fellow MPs from East New Britain to provide more funding for students to attend universities and higher education institutions in the country.
Tabar, who is the Gazelle MP, said ENB must learn from other provinces, like Enga, that had invested millions of kina over the years to send its students to attend universities and higher learning institutions. He said that had paid off with many of its young men and women now occupying top management positions both in the government and private sector. Tabar made the call in light of moves by the department to open up more space in the country’s universities and tertiary institutions. Tabar and his departmental secretary, Prof David Kavanamur have been tasked by the government to make sure that happened in a bid to increase the intake of Grade 12 school leavers into the country’s higher learning institutions. He said out of every 20,000 Grade 12 students, who completed their education each year, only 8, 000 of them were accepted to universities and higher institutions while the rest were left to pursue their education on their own. Tabar said his office had been negotiating with all universities and tertiary institutions to increase their annual intakes from 2015 onwards. He said even though all MPs, including him, had allocated funds to support their students attending universities and higher education institution, the province should stand as one to address the issue in a big way and make use of the opportunities being created by his department.
