GOVERNMENT will start a loan scheme for students attending universities, Prime Minister Peter O’Neill says.
He told staff and students during the University of PNG graduation ceremony yesterday that the university student loan scheme was to assist those who could not afford university fees. “We know that with our free education policy many more students will graduate from Year 12,” he said. “Many of our parents are very poor and cannot afford to send their children to university. As a result, the cycle of poverty continues.” O’Neill said K200 million would be allocated to establish a Tertiary Education Fund and start a student loan scheme next year. “This will be topped up each year so that students can borrow and repay over the lifetime of each student as soon as he or she earns some income,” he said. “This programme will enable all our children to be educated – not only those who can afford it.” O’Neill said it would open up university education opportunities for people who desired academic success but did not have the money. “Every loan that is repaid will go into the fund to continue to educate more students,” he said. O’Neill said similar funding schemes had been successfully introduced in countries such as Australia. “We must continue to consistently invest more funds in education at least over the next 10 years so that we can truly change our country,” he said.

I really appreciate Peter O'Neil for establishing this program to relief major school fee burden we face. I would be very grateful if it is put forward and practically happen next year 2016. I am first year student undertaking Bachelor of Health Management at Divine Word University and I know this will help me otherwise my poor parents will not be able to meet my school fee and my education will be disturbed

Thank you PNG Government for such a wonderful program to boost human resource in our country. I just received my LOA (Letter of Acceptance) from AAA Academy in Philippines but I can't afford to pay for my school fees as I originally came from a background where my parents are purely subsistence farmers. Can anyone assist me how to apply for the loan, please?
