Minister for Education Nick Kuman announced on Saturday that the country will soon have no national high schools. Sogeri, Passam, Aiyura and Kerevat, the traditional national high schools, will either become teachers colleges or institutions to support the education system. Mr Kuman said this while in Minj,
Jiwaka Province, for the opening of the provincial education office. "There will be no school of excellence in this country. Every secondary school is a school of excellence. There is no other concept. Every Papua New Guinean has the brains and will demonstrate this when they reach grades 11 and 12," he said. He said he had not approved when a budget of K20m was forwarded for the four first national high schools to become schools of excellence when he took office early this year. The minister said the Outcomes Based Education (OBE) system will be removed as of next year and by 2019, the Standard Based Education (SBE) system would be fully implemented. Mr Kuman said as of next month, all elementary schools and grades three, four and five will go through training programs in preparation for the SBE implementation. "We will go up annually and by 2019, OBE will be completely phased out," the minister said. He also said the Government would introduce a school fee loans scheme for students in tertiary institutions. This is due to mounting complaints from parents and students over how they are not benefiting from the tuition fee free policy. "We’re now about to direct the Department of Higher Education to come up with a loan scheme for tertiary students to obtain and pay their fees. This will allow students to complete their studies on the condition that they repay the loan when they work." Comments are closed.
