Papua New Guinea’s push to modernise its classrooms has gathered pace following the introduction of five new digital applications by the Department of Education, marking a major shift in how schools are managed across the country. The rollout, announced in Port Moresby, signals a transition from manual processes to technology-driven systems aimed at improving oversight, efficiency and service delivery throughout PNG’s education sector. Acting Education Minister Kinoka Feo said the launch represents more than just the introduction of new tools, describing it as part of a wider national direction towards digital governance.
“Today, we’re not just launching a software, we are witnessing the demonstration of a broader national mandate,” he said. Mr Feo linked the initiative to the Government’s declaration of 2026 as a defining year for ICT development, noting that digital systems must now play a central role in delivering public services. Education Secretary Dr Uke Kombra said the applications are aligned with the country’s long-term education reforms, including the Education Transformation Vision 2075 and the National Education Plan 2020–2029. He said the systems would strengthen accountability in the free education policy while improving the management of teachers nationwide. “These reforms are part of our commitment to leave no child behind,” Dr Kombra said, while acknowledging support from development partners including UNICEF, JICA and the Global Partnership for Education. Departmental officials also highlighted the importance of technical preparedness and training as the new systems are introduced across provinces. The ICT Division confirmed that training is already underway for provincial officers, although challenges remain in extending reliable internet access to rural schools. Officials from the Teacher Services Commission said the eRODSS platform will address long-standing delays in teacher postings and salary queries, improving accuracy in records. Other applications include the Teacher Pay Query System, GFEP Acquittal System, Student Admission System and the “Where’s My School” platform, all designed to improve transparency and access to information. Despite ongoing challenges such as connectivity and capacity building, education leaders say the rollout represents a key step in PNG’s transition towards a more accountable and technology-driven system.
