A TASKFORCE will be established to review and re-write the national curriculum statement for standards based education in PNG. Education Minister Nick Kuman has announced that it is also proposed that these statements or framework will be presented to the Parliament for its endorsement after the taskforce presents its final report. "We have designed, developed, and are progressively implementing the standards based curriculum at the elementary level," Mr Kuman said. The Minister said the Education Department has so far, developed standards statements by adopting and adapting the outcomes statements mostly from the outcomes based education curriculum. However, the department may create serious problems in the scope and sequencing of subject content and standards across the education system as the whole curriculum standards statement and standards framework from Elementary Prep to Grade 12, under four learning pathways has not been set. These learning pathways will be mathematics and science, English and literature, vocational skills and training, and moral and ethics. Minister added that a comprehensive national curriculum standards framework will be written and made available to develop the standards-based curriculum across all subjects and at all levels of basic education that is from elementary prep to Grade 12. Further, a set of measurable standards will also be developed for teacher education programs to measure teacher efficacy as well as the quality of teacher education provided by all teacher education institutions. Such a framework will provide a significant pedagogical platform for assessing teaching. and learning as well as for measuring the adequacy and the relevance of inputs, assessing the effectiveness of throughputs and measuring the quality of outcomes.
