Secondary education in Papua New Guinea is set for a targeted uplift following the launch of a new collaborative program between the PNG and Australian governments aimed at improving learning outcomes in key subjects. The PNG Secondary Education Program will run from 2026 to 2029 and will concentrate its efforts on selected high-performing secondary schools, including National Schools of Excellence, with a strong emphasis on practical, school-based improvements. At the centre of the initiative is classroom-level support, where teachers will receive professional development, updated teaching resources, and guidance to strengthen delivery in STEM fields and English. School leadership development is also a key component, focusing on improving instructional practices.
Beyond classroom teaching, the program will introduce improvements in school facilities, digital connectivity, and pilot blended learning methods designed to suit Papua New Guinea’s education environment. The program’s goals include improving student achievement in priority subjects, ensuring schools are safer and more inclusive for all learners, and building long-term education cooperation between Papua New Guinea and Australia. Site visits are scheduled to roll out in two phases during 2026. The first will cover schools in the National Capital District and Central Province, while the second phase will extend to Enga, Eastern Highlands, Morobe, East Sepik and East New Britain, engaging institutions such as Port Moresby National School of Excellence, Sogeri, Aiyura, Wawin, Kopen, Passam, Yarapos Mercy, Kerevat and OLSH Vunapope.
