PRIME Minister Peter O’Neill wants colleges, universities and tertiary institutes to allow students to enrol.
He said they should be flexible as they were not a private business but an institute to educate the students. “They must allow students to enrol, these are our students and must not be turned away,” O’Neill said. “We will sort out the issues of schools fees but students must not be turned away.” O’Neill made this statement after Morobe Governor Ginson Saonu told parliament yesterday that his students were still in Lae as he was not able to honour the provincial government’s component of subsidised school fees for tertiary institutes. Saonu said that for some time now, the Morobe government had been paying the parents’ components of school fees on behalf but this year, because of the delay in the provincial budget vetting process, they were not able to pay the fees. Saonu called on the Government to address the issue and to speak with the colleges, universities and other tertiary institutes to allow Morobe students to enrol late.
