PRIME Minister Peter O’Neill opened new facilities costing K6.5 million at a secondary school in Chuave, Chimbu, on Friday. Facilities at the Yaweh Moses Secondary School included four staff houses, six students’ dormitories, office complex, five classrooms, three science laboratories for chemistry, biology, physics and a computer lab – all fully-kitted. O’Neill told nearly 20,000 people who gathered there that his Government had initiated the district services improvement programme (DSIP) for the 89 districts in PNG to develop basic infrastructures for efficient flow of services. He praised Chuave MP Wera Mori and his district team for translating the Government’s DSIP policy to bear fruit in the district. “The Government has good policies for the people in the districts, schools are receiving money direct into their accounts, health centres are getting money, the districts, province, local level governments are getting money,” O’Neill said. “We will improve next year and go down to Ward level, to give allowances to ward councillors.” O’Neill said lack of developments in rural districts like his own Ialibu-Pangia prompted him to introduce the DSIP, provincial services improvement programmes (PSIP) and LLG services improvement programme (LLGSIP), which were translated into tangible developments like the new school facilities. He said many people in the past failed to bring tangible developments into rural districts that resulted in ineffective flow of services. O’Neill committed to support Chimbu Governor Noah Kool on his initiative to develop the Karamui Hydro and Chimbu Limestone projects. He said according to feasibility study reports, the hydro project would cost US$3 billion (K11 billion to K12 billion) which was the country’s total budget. “It will be very expensive but we will go stage by stage, the Government will give K500 million and will start the first stage in 2017. “Chimbu will become the powerhouse for PNG, producing 500 megawatts of power. Government will continue to give more money for the limestone project because it was going to benefit people.” The National
