The PNG University of Technology staff and students were urged to report any corrupt dealings of public funds by using the ‘phone against corruption’ platform launched by the Department of Finance in July 2014. Chief Internal Auditor of the University, Noah Angal expressed that the Phone Against Corruption is an initiative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) the Australian Aid and the PNG Government through the Department of Finance and is aimed at reporting corrupt activities though a free of charge texts to 16321 and follow the instructions to provide the details of the corrupt dealings. He said the sms reports will be kept confidential and follow up investigations will be done by assigned officers to validate the reports and propose for further actions. Mr Angal urged the students at the PNG University of Technology and other tertiary institutions around the country to take an active interest in the concept and implement it as they are the future leaders of the country. He added that staff can also assist by promoting it during their lessons as corruption is a cross cutting issue and is evidently eating away the fabrics of the society. According to a report of 6 April 2018 from Loop PNG, Finance Secretary Dr Ken Nangan said the initiative has uncovered over 500 cases. Also a report from UNDP revealed that the percentage of valid cases has increased from 8 per cent in 2014 to13.8 per cent, while the remaining percentage were general cases. The Eastern Highlands Province is leading with over 40 reported cases followed by the Western Highlands Province with 26 reported cases.
