POLICE have warned parents and schools to be more responsible after rounding up a group of primary school students drinking alcohol at Port Moresby’s Tokarara suburb at the weekend.
The nine students, aged between 16 and 17, were in a state of intimacy, huddled up inside a small guard house when police arrived. In their state of inebriation, the three girls and six boys quickly scrambled out of the building and told police they were Grade Eight students of the nearby June Valley Primary School. Police confiscated two bottles of whisky and several cans of Coke and paper cups inside the little quashed-up room only equipped with a bed. NCD Metropolitan Commander Ben Turi said a neighbour alerted a police patrol when he saw the youngsters going into the building at about 2pm on Saturday. The old abandoned guard house is located inside a compound owned by a former NCD politician but managed by a caretaker. This incident is the latest of a series of under-age binging busted by city police within the past five years. The students were escorted on foot by police to the nearby Waigani police station where they were temporarily detained and later released to their parents. Mr Turi said after sobering up, the students were cautioned and counselled before they were released. He said the Police Department will provide a report to the June Valley Primary School management for them to take appropriate disciplinary action against the students. "As a measure of deterrence, we expect the parents to take appropriate disciplinary action as well inside their respective homes," Mr Turi said. He said relevant state authorities, the schools, parents and guardians and the churches must work together to alleviate this problem. He added that the on-going incidences of alcohol abuse by young people showed that liquor outlets were not complying with the law. Post Courier
