Overcrowded Classrooms: A Growing Concern in Port Moresby Schools

​Schools in Port Moresby are struggling with overcrowding in classrooms, says NCD Education Service first assistant secretary Peter Kants.

Kants highlighted overcrowding as a significant issue, adding that support from parents, politicians, and businesses would be welcomed to address the problem. Schools have been directed to submit their enrolment lists from last year as part of measures to manage the situation.

“This year, we are not conducting enrolments. Only genuine transfer cases will be considered, but not immediately, as we need to prioritise existing students due to the lack of space,” Kants explained.

He noted two possible solutions to the issue: creating additional classes in schools willing to accommodate more students or redistributing students among schools in the city. “These measures are aimed at stabilising enrolment numbers and gradually reducing overcrowding in classrooms,” he said.

Kants also revealed plans to revive run-down schools to cater to the growing student population. However, he acknowledged challenges, particularly with settlers occupying some school buildings.

“We are facing difficulties in reclaiming these buildings, but efforts are underway to revive the schools. By building more classrooms, reopening schools, and similar initiatives, we hope to alleviate the overcrowding issue,” Kants stated.
