The government still owes University of Goroka K3 million in payment it should have made after the student unrest in 2016, an offgicial says.
“We still have some outstanding (money) to be paid by the government,” Chancellor Joseph Suwianomb said. He said the university owed service providers about K5 million that year with payments made instalments whenever funds were made available by the government. “We are not worrying about that, if they pay, that’s good, if not we need to move on and look at other alternates,” Sukwianomb said. He said the university had a registered business arm called the Unigor Limited. “Under this business arm we have Uni Travel, Uni Catering, Uni Printing and Uni Bakery,” he said. “We’ve just got a contract with the Goroka Airport to run a gift shop there. “Unigor is run by the board of directors. “The Government expects us to make money and that is what we are doing.” He said that on top of that, University of Goroka had established a total of six open colleges that will be offering distance programmes, which are matriculation and some programmes in professional studies “The regional campuses that we have are in Hagen (for Highlands region), National Capital District (for Southern) and Honiara (for Solomon Islands),” he said. He said that apart from the regional campus, University of Goroka had also established study centres in some provinces. “We also have study centres in Simbu, Lae, Oro and we recently opened one in Maprik.” He said registration for all the campuses had started.
