The number of teachers in the country will increase to more than 53,000 this year with the inclusion of graduates from teachers colleges, according to the Teaching Services Commission. “In 2015, there were about 52,000 teachers on the payroll system, and each year we have about 1000-1500 teachers exiting the education system,” Teaching Services Commission (TSC) chairman Baran Sori said. Sori told The National when queried about the number of teachers expected this year said: “We are expecting an increase, little over 3000 but this is not a definite figure, we will wait until all the vacant positions are filled.” He also said that reports on the disbursement of the teachers leave fares were not coming in as expected. “TSC only received a report from Jiwaka province, some have not received due to the availability of the funds.” “I think the teachers understand the situation the country is going through.” When asked if some of the teachers’ outstanding issues such as housing allowances and pay rises have been addressed by TSC, Sori said, “housing allowance is not an issue here. “The allowance is in built in the salary since it was effective in 2011. There is something some teachers do not understand.” “Teachers should not have outstanding issues, all they have to do is (1) resume on time, (2) fill in necessary documents like the resumption of duty summary form which determines that they are put on payroll for processing, and (3) operate within time frame.” “Teachers will resume on Jan 25.” “They are expected to be in school and not travelling to schools (on Jan 25). This are very important things which teachers can simply do,” he said. “They are required by law to complete the resumption of duty summary sheet (RoDSS) and teacher record of appointment (TROA) on the first day that they resume duty at the school. This activity is important because it will confirm that the teacher has actually resumed duty in a school and position that the National Education Board (NEB) or Provincial Education Board (PEB) has appointed or posted him/her for this school year,” he said. Sori said similarly, filling in of the RoDSS would determine the continuity of the teacher’s salary payments for the year. “Therefore, it is important that the form is completed properly and correctly on the specified date,” Sori said. Principal or head teacher, should available on site on the first day.
