MOREHEAD High School in South Fly, Western, is unable to allow its grade 10s to sit national examinations because it is suspended. The school was established last year in the Morehead local-level government area with approval from the Division of Education but was forced to close this year in term three as local authorities failed to keep it functioning. A senior education officer in Daru, who asked not to be named, told The National that the school faced many pressing issues from the start – all related to funding shortfall. He said that despite its approval, the school did not have its own allocated land to set up.
Grade 9 classes last year were using the premises and facilities of Morehead Primary School. The problem continued this year so the district education board was forced to shut it down for an indefinite period. “The school had to be shut down simply because it was using the premises and facilities of another functioning school. It has no science lab, dormitories and mess hall,” the officer said. The officer said that the district education board, South Fly administration and Morehead LLG had failed in their responsibility to source funding to run the school. Provincial education advisor Netsey Baerey could not be reached for comment as he is on leave. South Fly MP Sekie Agisa said he was unaware of the situation. “None of my officers informed me about its suspension. All I know is that the pioneer Grade 10s of Morehead High are sitting their national examinations,” Agisa said. The Grade 10s are expected to repeat next year when school resumes. The National
