Schools in Morobe Province have been told to ignore ministerial directives not to pay project fees.
Provincial education adviser Keith Jiram said yesterday schools would continue to collect project fees until the Government’s tuition fee free (TFF) policy funds were released to the provincial schools’ accounts. Schools feared closure if TFF funds from the Government were not release quickly. "We are very mindful of these funds as they may not be released quickly so we are allowing our schools to collect fees so they can continue operate or there won’t be any funds to keep the schools going," Mr Jiram said. He stressed that not all schools would receive the funds from the Government so they were encouraging parents to support their respective schools by paying the project fees. "Most schools will be affected by this policy because there will be an increase with the number of students and resources will be scarce for the children’s learning," he said. Mr Jiram said the Morobe PEB had set up a standard project fees of K50 for elementary schools, K150 for primary and K250 for secondary schools. "We are not forcing parents to pay, and also we are not sending the children back home but for those who have agreed and make payments will receive their reimbursement later when the funds are received," Mr Jiram said. "But it is unfortunate that those schools that will miss out on the TFF funds will fully operate with the support of parents paying the project fees."
