THE first round of the first Melanesian School of Debate began in Port Moresby on Monday featuring Vanuatu and Solomon Islands.
The two teams debated on whether customary land in Melanesia should be registered to ensure sustainable development and economic growth. Director of Research and Programmes at the Institute of Public Policy in Vanuatu Dalcianna Somare, who brought the Vanuatu students, challenged them not to forget that they were future leaders of the country. Somare said the debate was a good initiative to train young leaders. Next year they would push for more countries in the region to join the debate. The topic for the debate between Vanuatu and PNG is whether donors should decide how Pacific Island countries spend their money. Team PNG meet Solomon Islands today to decide which teams proceed to the finals on Friday. Comments are closed.
