Thirty students from Gulf will study at the President University in Jakarta, Indonesia, next year – thanks to a sponsorship by the Gulf government. Governor Chris Haiveta said this was a milestone scholarship programme. Havieta, in a recent visit, concluded a formal agreement to have 30 students from Gulf attend the prestigious Indonesian university next year. The course the students would be studying would be determined by the province’s development aspirations.
The governor said courses such as engineering, accounting and economics, environmental science, fisheries, marine resources and tourism were high on the list. A selection committee headed by Professor David Kavanamur would screen applications and select the first batch of 30 students to benefit from the scholarship programme. Haiveta said he was pleased that this opportunity had been created for the people for their future generation to attain higher education to serve the province and the country. “I am very pleased, indeed, to announce that the Gulf government has concluded and signed an agreement with this prestigious Indonesian university, a first of its kind for any provincial government in PNG,” he said. “Those to be selected will have to meet high eligibility standards, including academic, personal attitude and moral, so that the province achieves value for money from those successful applicants. “They must excel in their respective fields of study and be good ambassadors of Gulf and of Papua New Guinea.”
