THE higher education sector needs a growth strategy that will create sufficient capacity to meet the growing demand, Minister for Higher Education, Research and Technology Francis Marus says.
Speaking at the opening of the new Pacific Adventist University (PAU) school of business complex, Marus said the facility will help PAU increase its enrolment thus addressing the issue of accessing to higher education sector and improving quality. He said this will increase the value of students’ learning experience and will translate into a quality knowledge and skills. He said the increase in population together with reforms in the education system has resulted in the demand for higher education institution capacity to enrol students. “The ministry and department remain focus on enhancing the potential and ability of suitably qualified students to enrol in available splaces in PNG,” Marus said. He also commended Australia-Papua New Guinea Incentive Fund (PNGIF) on its investment to higher education sector through PAU by funding the project with K10 million. He said to achieve government priorities as stipulated in the government policy and Vision 2050, the government must always partner with development partners, private sectors, churches and also within itself through public-public partnership. “Partnering is vital as it produces expertise often the government does not possess and that is an added benefit to improve our higher education sector in the country,” Marus said. “Partnership can be used as a platform to deliver projects and quality services.”
