A JUDGE yesterday sentenced a man to 17 years in jail and told police to arrest others involved in the rape of a female student in Central three years ago.
National Court judge Justice Panuel Mogish jailed James John, 28, for raping the girl with the help of students. The offence was videotaped on a mobile phone and posted on social media afterwards. “I recommend to the commissioner of police (Gari Baki) to direct his investigators to locate the other perpetrators to the offence and bring them to justice,” Justice Mogish said. “Their identities are known to the school authorities. “It is unfair for this offender to be singled out, charged, prosecuted, convicted and to be sentenced, when his accomplices are walking around freely in the community. “Those persons pose a serious threat to any woman or girl and the sooner they are apprehended and charged, the better the community can be.” The girl was 19 at the time and attended a school outside Port Moresby. The incident happened on June 16, 2015, during a party by students. Justice Mogish told the court that the punishment imposed on John was to also serve as a warning to male students to respect their female colleagues in school. “It should send a strong warning to male students who take advantage of female students and subject them to crimes of violence like pack rapes to refrain from such temptations and concentrate on their studies,” Justice Mogish said. “Those students who venture beyond this boundary have no place in any learning institutions.” Justice Mogish suspended two years for the time spent in custody, and another three years, with the remaining 12 years to be served.
