CHILDREN should be nurtured in ways that will help unearth their talents and skills to set them on the right path at a young age, an educationist says.
Lahara Birdwing School principal Helen Harricknen made these remarks in her keynote message to parents and guardians at the end of the school’s Lion King Musical last Thursday. She said it was through avenues like the musical that motivated children to find what they were capable of at a young age. “Kids should be involved in things like this to find their hidden talents and skills so that they go on to become successful people in life,” she said. “I’m sure this (musical) is a stepping stone to helping these kids come out of their shell and be confident in the things they do and the things they dream of doing.” She said the musical related to life in many ways. She said it told of the good times where the environment and all the creatures responded to good leadership – by Mufasa – and hard times brought on by bad leadership – in Scar. The play, held at the Don Bosco Technological Institute, attracted a large audience that was impressed at the wealth of talent and confidence displayed by the students. “I didn’t expect this at all,” an elated grandparent said after the musical. “”All these kids did so well to memorise the words and their parts (in the musical) and I really enjoyed how they were exuberant.” Harricknen acknowledged the contribution of grandparents to the upbringing of children saying that they were always there in the absence of parents who were often caught up with work.
