THE Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) has sent almost 5000 Papua New Guineans to Japan for training in various fields since 1974.
Speaking at the opening of PNG Jica Alumni Association Seminar 2017, Jica chief representative to PNG Takashi Toyama, said the Japanese Government and PNG Government had partnered in various ways and this was one way to strengthen the tie. He said Jica sends 80 to 90 Papua New Guineans to Japan for training every year. “The trainings in Japan is to develop capacity of the Government officials from PNG and once they return back to PNG they will be able to contribute more to the sustainable development of this country,” Toyama said. Toyama said the PNG Jica Alumni Association was important for the ex-participants for networking and work together for the betterment of PNG. “I’d like the PNG Jica alumni association to be more active and create network with each other to help this country to be better,” he said. A participant in 2015, James Namari, said the training had contributed a lot to his work as a primary (education) curriculum officer. “It was helpful in terms of curriculum development as well as helping our implementers, the teachers,” Namari told The National. He said one of the most important thing he learnt was how to develop textbooks and teacher’s manual. Namari said he is happy and willing to share the knowledge and skills he gained from the training with his fellow colleagues and the teachers. The National
