JAPAN International Cooperation Agency will support the National Department of Education from 2016 to 2019 with new science and mathematics textbooks to use in the standards-based curriculum project.
JICA delegates led by Atsushi Matachi, the mission leader and senior advisor Shigeru Sugiyama, the chief representative who is based in Port Moresby, and Education Secretary Dr Uke Kombra signed the first formal agreement meeting last month. Kombra said the Government had given directives in 2011 and 2013 to move away from the Outcomes-Based Curriculum (OBC) to Standards-Based Curriculum (SBC). “As it is a priority directive from the Government, we have started the SBC at elementary level in 2014 and this year we are rolling it out,” Kombra said. “JICA will support us in this project with science and mathematics student textbooks that will guide teachers for effective implementation of the curriculum in these two subjects. He said JICA had over the years supported the education sector in many areas of education service delivery and development. He said Japan was very well known in the area of science and mathematics. “We will continue to enjoy this opportunity and privilege that the Government and people of Japan give so generously.” Sugiyama said JICA would work very closely with the Education Department to develop the new set of curriculum. Matachi said: “So far we have completed the EQTV programme in the last 10 years. We are happy to contribute to the improvement of education in Papua New Guinea.” According to Kombra, the SBC technical cooperation between JICA and the department will run for three years and all schools, from elementary to Grade 12, will use new science and mathematics textbooks by 2019 when the SBC project is completed.
