HUNDREDS of students attending three primary schools in Raicoast, Madang, have been told it is safe to return to classes after peace talks to halt fighting among groups in the area. The students attend the primary schools at Ranara, Kikipe, Taure and Niningo in the Naho Rawa local level government of Raicoast. The fighting began when a group calling themselves the “hausman” went around the area killing people they suspected of practising sorcery. It escalated when relatives of those killed went after members of the group.
Ranara Primary School headmaster Gununga Dorio said they had continued classes when the fighting began but stopped last month when he and a teacher were attacked inside the school compound. The teacher attacked was given K2000 compensation by the group on Monday. Raicoast education programme manager Clement Awan thanked the Naho Rawa people for making peace to allow the schools to reopen. Raicoast MP Peter Sapia who is from that area has been challenged to build roads in the inland areas and provide health and education facilities.
