THE Parliamentary Referral Committee on Education has set out the terms of reference to inquire into the disbursement of salaries to teachers in lower primary schools in the country. The committee, chaired by Wabag MP Robert Ganim, passed a resolution last week to inquire into the disbursement of teachers’ salaries, and other entitlements for elementary, community, top-up and secondary schools. The committee, in a statement to Parliament presented by member and Eastern Highlands Governor Julie Soso, said there are many issues affecting teachers throughout the country and the committee decided to focus on one aspect which is the salaries and their entitlements. “Their welfare and wellbeing are important factors that will support our teachers to execute their prime responsibilities of teaching our children who are the future leaders of the country.” She said that through this inquiry the committee will make further recommendations for another inquiry into other issues affecting teachers and the education system in the country. The committee during its deliberations adopted a number of terms of references with the final observations to be reported to parliament by May 20. They have requested various government departments and officers to provide background information and explanations relating to salaries and other entitlements for teachers. Current processes and procedures will be examined and observed with a view to recommending a new reliable and transparent process, which they hope will promote accountability. They will also examine any other relevant issue pertaining to this. PNG Education News/Post Courier
