Iarowari High School in the Central Province has a long and colorful history that dates back to the Second World War.
Much of this history has been overshadowed by lack of attention given to the school in elevating its status. The school is passionate about its history and is working towards achieving its secondary school status to gain the prominence it deserves. Nestled in the Sogeri Plateau is Iarowari High School. The School has come a long way to what it is today, from its humble beginnings as the New Guinea School of Signals. It was also the birth place of the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary in 1953. Its status as a conventional high school started in 1962, enrolling only boys. Iarowari then was amalgamated with Sogeri High School. The first female intakes were in 1982, transforming Iarowari into a co-educational institution. But for too long, Iarowari has never received the prominence it rightfully deserves, with much of the attention given to Sogeri National High School The school wants the country to know that it also played a role in nation building. Many of the school’s buildings have seen better days and the library also needs a major overhaul for new books. Staff housing is also a burden but the school is improvising to cater for its staff by converting old dormitories into duplexes. Currently, there are 500 students enrolled in the school. The teacher to student ratio is one teacher per 30 students. The school has begun the process of working towards attaining secondary status. With the Tuition Free Funds policy, it has embarked on a number of projects such as the new girls’ dormitories, school fencing and assembly hall. Headmaster Andrew Moava highlight’s the vision of the school. Like Sogeri National High School, Iarowari boasts impressive list of former students, including, Central Governor Kila Haoda and Abau MP Dr Puka Temu. They want their leaders and relevant authorities concerned to help them achieve their endeavors as an institution.

I liked your piece [above] and particularly your reference to the library. I arrived as a teacher at Iarowari [Headmaster D Haslett] in January 1975 with duties [among others] "Organisation of the library; Improvements to the library". Later inspection report stated "You have reorganised and extensively developed the library" - I have to say with the active participation and help of students. I also coached the "Aussie Rules" football team. I would love to have a photo of the 1973 team. One of the helpful local staff was "Kowpa" who came from the Highlands. I would love to know if he is still alive and if so where he lives..BEST WISHES TO ALL AT IAROWARI.

Hi William, I was a former student of Iarowari from 1983-1986.I went on to Sogeri National High School. There was a Kaupa who also was a cook at Sogeri and I believe he must be the one you were referring to. The school has attained Secondary status and the first grade 12 students will be graduating on the 06 October, 2016.We also had late Mr.Nero who was our Aussie Rules coach. Comments are closed.
