THE Ialibu Secondary High School in Southern Highlands has resumed classes after it was forced to close following a dispute over the principal’s position.
District education inspector Isaac Mini said most of the teachers had already returned and started classes. “However, there are only few students in class. And I am appealing to the parents to send their children back to school as we are running behind on our class schedules,” he said. “Police will remain on school grounds and will provide security for the students and teachers until normalcy is restored.” Ialibu police station commander Mack Hanema said police would remain in the school premises and stay in one of the staff quarters. A spokesman from the district administration said that they were working on providing transport for students living far from the school. Meanwhile, Mini said primary schools in the Ialibu-Pangia district needed more teachers, classrooms and staff quarters because of the increase in the number of students. Mini said there were so many students in one classroom and it was affecting the student-teacher ratio. “TFF is a good thing. I am happy that many students now have the opportunity to attend classes,” he said. “But the authorities must also build more classrooms and staff houses to cater for the increase in student numbers. “We have 37 primary schools in the district – 23 in Pangia and 14 in Ialibu – with almost 60 to 70 students in one class.”
