HAGEN MP William Duma is concerned that new high schools are established in Western Highlands without having properly trained teachers and learning facilities.
Duma said leaders who are going around establishing high schools must make sure that they do not cheat the people. He said in Western Highlands there are many high schools “popping up like mushrooms.” Dumas said the problem with this many schools is there are no teachers and teaching resources for them to function well. “You cannot just go around telling the people that I’m building more schools and increasing the number of high schools,” he said. “This will never work because you are cheating the people if you do not provide teachers and facilities.” He said his electoral office has been providing funding for more classrooms, staff accommodation and school uniforms because those were the immediate needs of most existing schools. He said in Western Highlands alone the provincial government has declared about 17 new high schools. Duma said the provincial government should instead consider equipping teachers and provide better learning facilities. “It has no meaning when there are no teachers to teach and students have no learning materials,” he said. “We need to speak the truth and not just go around and trying to destroy the students education.” He said that the national government was prioritising education in the country and it would be good if the normal process (in establishing schools) was followed. “We need to follow the normal procedure and help to provide a better education to the people.”
