The Together for Education (TfE) project is focusing on improving literacy and numeracy skills for elementary school children in central Madang and Morobe.
The project, in a baseline survey conducted in Middle Ramu, Usino Bundi, Markham and Nawaeb, stated that the prospect of early grade leaners accessing quality education remains a challenge for children in rural areas. Eliot Raphael, from Markham, said he was happy with the project conducting baseline survey to improve literacy and numeracy skills as he believes literacy levels had dropped. “We have large numbers of school leavers in Markham because our children could not read and write and answer questions correctly in their examinations.” Together for Education project is supporting the Government’s National Education Plan 2015-2019, part of a K112 million education partnership between Australia and PNG.

Having suitable books, and enough of them, in Primary schools along with good teachers, are both important in improving literacy. I sometimes wonder if schools are still being supplied with enough suitable books? And yes I do have a personal interest in this!
