STUDENT enrollment in schools has increased by more than 20% as a result of the Government’s free education policy, Education Minister James Marape says.
He told parliament yesterday that student enrollment in 2010 was 53%. This increased to 74.8% this year. “That is a testament to the fact that the free education policy has worked,” Marape said. He was responding to a question by Telefomin MP Solan Mirisim on the status of the education policy. Marape said despite many criticisms that the quality assurance could be compromised, the government was confident of fulfilling the vision of achieving 100% Universal Basic Education by 2015. “We would submit our scorecards to the United Nations on the MDGs and among them is the UBE target to be met by 2015,” he said. He said the Government was embarking on another radical policy – the compulsory education policy – next year. “While there might be lack of space next year in terms of addressing all school enrollments, let me impress on education authorities that we don’t envisage a total new enrollment in all layers of education system. “We expect compulsory enrollment at the elementary level.” He told the House that a report on the review of the Outcomes-Based Education by an independent body led by Divine Word University president Fr Jan Czuba had been given to the education department.
