The numbers of students that are in schools have risen to an average of 55 students per classroom due to the free education policy. Students attending secondary schools in Lae City and Papua New Guinea are sharing very small classroom space. Busu Secondary School has increased its students’ intakes. Some of its students have come back to school after many years, of school fee problems. School Principal, George Geyactulu says that in all his years of teaching, students have never exceeded numbers that he counts as over the normal quota. “It’s the first, in all my years as teacher and Principle to see students in a class numbering sixty-three,” he said. It came at a time when schools are not prepared, especially in terms of facilities”. The effects include lack of funding that will go to teacher training, procuring textbooks and school materials, and to allow schools to operate without facing financial shortfalls. The government has allocated K300 million kina into education this year, which is a substantial amount to cater for school subsidies and equipment. EMTV Comments are closed.
