A TOTAL of 99 students graduated from the Flexible Open and Distance Education (FODE) program at the Meri Senta in Lihir last week, marking another milestone in community education development in the province. The program is delivered by the Kokoda Track Foundation in partnership with Newmont to provide accessible learning opportunities for people who were unable to complete formal education through the mainstream school system. The graduation ceremony was attended by key stakeholders, including KTF chief executive officer Dr Genevieve Nelson, Newmont Lihir manager for non-process infrastructure Michael Cotterell, and New Ireland Provincial Government chief executive officer for social services Benson Apelis, along with community leaders and education representatives.
Speaking during the ceremony on behalf of Newmont Lihir’s general manager, Mr Cotterell said education remained one of the most important long-term investments for communities. “Through our partnership with KTF, which is now entering its third year and expected to continue for another two years, we are strengthening teachers, empowering students and creating opportunities that extend beyond the classroom,” he said. Dr Nelson praised the determination shown by the graduates, saying the program provides an important second-chance pathway for many adult learners in Lihir. “You are choosing to go to school. We may have helped open the door through this partnership with Newmont and the Provincial Department of Education, but you are the ones who stepped through it,” she said. She also acknowledged the sacrifices made by families and communities in supporting students to continue their education through the FODE pathway. The partnership between KTF and Newmont has also supported broader education initiatives in Lihir, including teacher development programs aimed at improving learning outcomes across local schools. Program organisers said the continued support for FODE is helping strengthen education systems, build employment pathways and create long-term opportunities for people in the Lihir community. They added that investment in education remains critical in building resilient communities and supporting sustainable development for future generations. headlines
