Education Secretary Dr Uke Kombra wants all school authorities to be alert and tough on arson cases and incidences. Kombra said arson in schools was a major concern and school boards, head teachers, managers, parents and local communities should stop it. “Burning down of school buildings is not the solution to any problem and this ill behaviour must be stopped,” he said. Kombra was speaking following reports of incidences in the past few months in various schools in the country.
A recent one was at Ningerum High School in Western earlier this month. “It is not only the financial loss you should consider but there is also the consequential loss,” Kombra said. “For example, consider arson at Kila Kila Secondary School last month where over K1 million worth of classroom block was burnt to ashes. “Despite no major tragedies like loss of lives, there is every reason to be worried and to take necessary precautions to prevent calamities. “These incidents are signs of possible disasters. “For each school, whether they were aware of what was going on or not, whether they acted in time or didn’t, the buck must stop with the head teacher. “As usual when there is a fire in the school, the first reaction is shock, followed by total disbelief and then realisation that thousands or millions of kina worth of school infrastructures have gone.”
